What do we do when an active shooter is wreaking havoc in one of our nation’s schools? We call the authorities who have firearms and proper training to neutralize the armed assailant with any means of force necessary, and we hope that they arrive on the scene in time to take the assailant down before they can kill a catastrophic number of people. Let me rephrase: if a madman with a gun is shooting at your children in their school, the adults in charge will call a professional with a gun to save the day.

In the wake of yet another school shooting and the flurry of talk that follows, I think it is time to be honest about the actual problem behind school shootings. A gun cannot be the solution to the problem as well as the problem itself, so it becomes obvious that it is the person behind the gun that is the variable that requires our attention. Furthermore, we need to start talking about the implementation of a system that will keep our kids safe in schools, and since most perpetrators of mass shootings did not attain their guns legally, gun control is not the solution we need.
