Protect the Right to Choose

Consider the issue of abortion: are you pro-life, or pro-choice? Perhaps you are pro-life as an individual, as a human being, because the thought of terminating a child, even one you do not want to bring into this world, is intolerable. But you as a human being, and you as a political being with opinions about the way things should be in the world are not the same person; you as a political being understand that your opinions for yourself are not synonymous with the greater good. Is it possible to be pro-life and pro-choice? We do live in a world where everyone tries to bundle themselves neatly into shades of black and white, so perhaps not, but in choosing where to stand regarding this sensitive topic, perhaps the open mindedness to be both is precisely what we need.

Be pro-life for yourself, if that is what you choose, but for the rest of the world, be pro-choice. This does not mean that you are advocating for the termination of innocent lives; it means that you are advocating for the continuation of the right to choose. Has it ever occurred to you that the decision to keep an unplanned, unwanted, inconvenient pregnancy is a choice just as controversial as the decision to abort?
