Perhaps the greatest fallacy of adulthood is that one day you’ll wake up and feel in control.

The reality of adulthood is one of those things that you’ve got to laugh about otherwise you might cry.

Have you ever been in a room where something happened, something that needed a responsible adult’s intervention, and you look around for that person only to realize it’s you? Your first thought is to wonder what fool put you in charge and your second is to think, “here goes nothing,” while hoping you’ve got enough wisdom to make the right decision. You are sure everyone must see you have no clue, but if not you then who?

This is why all the jokes about the trials and tribulations of “adulting” are so funny because the hills and valleys of navigating life guided by your own best judgement is a humorous, messy process of panic, hard work, and triumph.

Here’s the thing: no matter how bad it gets, no matter how far you fall, no matter how much you want to give up and quit moving forward, you cannot do that in your own life.

Nobody is coming to save you from yourself. The trajectory of your life is 100% in your hands. Whether you need to hold yourself accountable or get out of your own way, nobody is going to do that for you. Those words, “if not me, then who,” should be what motivates every decision you make about your present and your future. No one else can tell you to pay…
