Maybe there are four types of writing?
1) journaling with no care for quality of content (writing for yourself)
2) personal narratives shared with the public (writing for yourself, but with care for the quality where others who enjoy is a bonus)
3) writing as a business selling your own ideas, products, services, etc. (quality is important, growing audience is important)
4) writing as a business selling someone else’s ideas, products, services, etc. (quality and a growing audience are maybe twice as important because your ability to sell with your words affects your livelihood as well as the livelihood of the people who’s ideas you are selling)
I am sure you could break it down further from these four, but I feel like this is a god framework. Bottom line: I feel like writers should always enjoy their work. If not, I bet people will sense it in the writing, and that might be why the writing does not “sell”. Maybe that’s why pieces unattended for public eyes are so gripping. They are unapologetic, pure, and full of life not tainted by expectations.
