“It is so hard to take time in this digital age,” said a woman after I announced this week that I would be erecting some healthy boundaries in my life.

She is not wrong, but it is also more complicated than that. It is hard to take time, but only because we do not make the time, or we do not take the steps to protect the time we have. We do live in a digital age and what that means is that we are more accessible to one another than at any previous point in human history. We are connected to each and every person on the globe, we can reach anyone at any hour with relative ease. What may seem a wonderous blessing on one hand may be insidious and invasive on the other. When the overconnected nature of our lives begins to overwhelm, we may notice we are no longer functioning as well as we once did. This is the perfect moment to establish healthy boundaries to restore harmony and order to our daily lives.

Walls are erected as a fortress to keep people out while boundaries are put in place to help people find the door. Healthy boundaries serve as a portal through which meaningful, purposeful, respectful interactions between yourself and others may pass.
