I had a bit of an accident this morning, but it was not the driver’s fault and I hope they don’t feel bad. I got too excited and ran out into the street even though everyone was yelling at me to stop. There was honking and screeching and I think maybe some screaming and then everything after that just kind of goes blank. If it hurt, I cannot remember.
It is not so bad up here, I guess. The food bowls never empty, the water bowls never go dry, there’s more toys than I can dream of playing with, and there are lots of other dogs to play with, too. They’re racing through the fields, wrestling in the grass, chasing squirrels and birds into the trees, and having the greatest time. It’s hard to get in the spirit though, so I’ll just sit and watch for now.
You see, I feel like it wasn’t my time to go yet. I had a purpose, a job to do down there. My girl has been sick for a real long time, she’s hurting, and she needs me really bad. All I can do is think of her and how scared she’s been and how when it gets really bad she tangles her small, sticky fingers up in my fur and buries her face in my neck. Who’s going to comfort her now?
I think I’ll just sit right here on the grass where I can keep an eye on that clearing in the trees along the edge of the field. Every so often someone wanders through there looking for one of us and although I don’t necessarily want to see her here…
