Have you watched the video of Amy Cooper calling the authorities regarding her interactions with Christian Cooper in Central Park? If you have not yet then you must. In it you will witness a woman who knew exactly what she was doing when she told Christian Cooper that she was calling the authorities to report an African American man attacking her in The Ramble, a wooded area of Central Park. Her face twists with nauseating malice and disturbing glee when she says it and for a moment you get a glimpse of the pure evil at the core of racial inequality in America. Amy Cooper knew what many of us know even if we do not wish to admit it: in an altercation where a white woman accuses a black man of assault, the authorities are more likely to believe her story over his, and in a country where black people are treated worse than animals at the hands of local authorities, any interaction with police officers as a result of her accusations might have ended with his death. So long as there are people like Amy Cooper in the world, people who exploit this aspect of white privilege, no black or brown person will ever experience freedom or equality in the United States of America.
